Stirred-tank bioreactors have been designed for:
- Purification of product
- Addition of preservatives to the product
- Availability of oxygen throughout the process
- Ensuring anaerobic conditions in the culture vessel
Solution
Stirred-tank bioreactor is provided with a stirrer for the availability of oxygen throughout the process.
In stirred tank bioreactors, the air is bubbled through the reactor using a sparger. Air bubbles increase the surface area for transfer of oxygen and result in better mixing.
The function of the agitation system is to increase mass transfer rates through the bulk liquid and bubble boundary layers by providing proper mixing.
