Same amount of electricity is passed through aqueous solutions of $\mathrm{AgNO}_3$ and $\mathrm{CuSO}_4$. The number of $\mathrm{Ag}$ and $\mathrm{Cu}$ atoms deposited are $x$ and $y$ respectively. The correct relationship between $x$ and $y$ is

Solution

When same amount of electricity is passed through $\mathrm{AgNO}_3$ and $\mathrm{CuSO}_4$ aqueous solution. Then 1 mole of $\mathrm{Ag}^{+}$will deposit and half mole of $\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$ will deposite. The relations between $\mathrm{Ag}^{+}$and $\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$ ion is as follows $1 \mathrm{~mol}$ of $\mathrm{Ag}^{+}=\frac{1}{2} \mathrm{~mol}$ of $\mathrm{Cu}^{2+}$ Thus for, $\frac{x \text { mol of } \mathrm{Ag}^{+}}{y \mathrm{~mol} \mathrm{of} \mathrm{Cu}^{2+}}=\frac{1 \mathrm{~mol}}{1 / 2 \mathrm{~mol}}$ $\therefore \quad x=2 y$
