Rate of dehydration of alcohols follows the order:
  1. $2^{\circ}>1^{\circ}>\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{OH}>3^{\circ}$
  2. $3^{\circ}>2^{\circ}>1^{\circ}>\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{OH}$
  3. $2^{\circ}>3^{\circ}>1^{\circ}>\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{OH}$
  4. $\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{OH}>1^{\circ}>2^{\circ}>3^{\circ}$

Solution

The order of dehydration among three type of alcohols is $3^{\circ}>2^{\circ}>1^{\circ}>\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{OH}$. This behaviour is related to the relative stabilities of carbocations $\left(3^{\circ}>2^{\circ}>1^{\circ}\right)$.
