Phenolic group can be identified by a positive:
  1.  Phthalein dye test
  2. Lucas test
  3. Tollen’s test
  4. Carbylamine test

Solution

Carbylamine Test-Identification of primary amines

Lucas Test - Differentiation between 1°,2° and 3° alcohols

Tollen's Test - Identification of Aldehydes

Phthalein Dye Test - Identification of phenols

Phenol on heating with phthalic anhydride in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid forms a colourless condensation compound called phenolphthalein. On further reaction with dilute sodium hydroxide solution gives a pink colour fluorescent compound called fluorescein. Characteristic colours are produced by different phenolic compounds which can be viewed under white background.
