On the basis of Le-Chatelier's principle, predict which of the following conditions would be unfavourable for the formation of $\mathrm{SO}_{3}$ ? Given that $2 \mathrm{SO}_{2}+\mathrm{O}_{2} ightleftharpoons 2 \mathrm{SO}_{3} ; \Delta \mathrm{H}=-42 \mathrm{kcal}$
  1. Low pressure and low temperature
  2. High pressure and low temperature
  3. High temperature and low pressure
  4. High concentration of $\mathrm{SO}_{2}$

Solution

Since reaction is exothermic hence low temperature will favour forward reaction also volume is decreased by applying high pressure .
