Observe the following statements: i. According to VSEPR theory, \(\mathrm{ClF}_3\) and \(\mathrm{SO}_2\) are shown \(A B_3 E\) and \(A B_2 E\) type molecules respectively. ii. \(\mathrm{SF}_4\) has "See-saw" shape. iii. \(\mathrm{HgCl}_2\) and \(\mathrm{PbCl}_2\) have same shape. The statements which is/are incorrect:
  1. i, ii only
  2. iii only
  3. i, ii, iii
  4. ii, iii only

Solution

Statements (i) and (iii) are not correct. Their correct explanation are as follows: (i) According to VSEPR theory \(\mathrm{ClF}_3\) has 3 bond pairs and 2 lone pairs thus it is \(A B_3 E_2\) type molecule whereas \(\mathrm{SO}_2\) has \(2 \sigma\) bond pairs and one lone pair so it is \(A B_2 E\) type molecule. (iii) \(\mathrm{HgCl}_2\) has a linear shape because it has 2 bond pairs only whereas \(\mathrm{PbCl}_2\) has 2 bond pairs with one lone pair thus it has a bent shape.
