Magnesium is burnt in the air to form A and B. When B is hydrolyzed, C and D are formed. D is the reactant in the manufacture of nitric acid by Ostwald's process. What is C ?
  1. NH3
  2. Mg(OH)2
  3. MgO
  4. NO

Solution

In air, oxygen and nitrogen gases are present with which magnesium reacts and the reaction takes place as below:

Mgs + Air  MgO + Mg3N2                               A           B

B reacts with water to form magnesium hydroxide and ammonia.

Mg3N2 + H2O MgOH2 + NH3

NH3 acts as a reactant in the manufacture of nitric acid by Ostwald's process.
