Let z¯ denote the complex conjugate of a complex number z. If z is a non-zero complex number for which both real and imaginary parts of z¯2+1z2 are integers, then which of the following is/are possible value(s) of z ?

Solution

Let z=r.eiθ

So, z¯2+1z2=r2+1r2e-2iθ=a+ib (say), given a,bZ

Now taking mod both side and squaring we get,

r2+1r22=a2+b2

r8-a2+b2-2r4+1=0

r4=a2+b2-2±a2+b2-22-42

Now comparing from option we get, for a2+b2=45 (i.e a,b=±6,±3 or ±3,±6

We get r=43+3205214
