Let S 1 = i , j , k   : i , j , k ∈ 1 , 2 , … , 10 S 2 = i , j   : 1 ≤ i < j…

Let S1=i,j,k :i,j,k1,2,,10

S2=i,j :1i<j+210,i,j1,2,,10

S3=i,j,k,l:1i<j<k<l,i,j,k,l1,2,.....,10

and  S4=i,j,k,l : i,j,k and l are distint elements in 1,2,...,10

If the total number of elements in the set Sr is nr,r=1,2,3,4 then which of the following statements is (are) TRUE?

  1. n1=1000
  2. n2=44
  3. n3=220
  4. n412=420

Solution

Si=i,j,k:i,j,k1,2,...,10

n1=10×10×10=1000

i.e., number of elements in S1=1000

S2=i,j:1i<j+210,i,j1,2,...,10

j i
1 1,2
2 1,2,3

8 1,2,3,....,9

n2=2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9

=44

S3=i,j,k,l:1i<j<k<l,i,j,k,l1,2,....10

n3=10C4

=10×3×8×7×6!4×3×2×1×6!=210

i.e. number of elements in S3=210

S4=i,j,k,l:i,j,k and l are distinct elements in 1,2,.......,10

n4=10×9×8×7 or 10C4×4!

=5040

n412=504012=420
