Let C be a circle passing through the points A2,-1 and B3,4. The line segment AB is not a diameter of C. If r is the radius of C and its centre lies on the circle x-52+y-12=132, then r2 is equal to

Solution

Equation of line joining AB is 

y+1=5x-2

i.e. 5x-y-11=0 

Also AB=3-22+4+12=26

r is the radius of the circle C

For the circle x-52+y-12=132

centre is 5,1 and radius R=132

Equation of perpendicular bisector of AB will be y-1=-15x-5x+5y-10=0

Solving this equation of line with x-52+y-12=132, we get 

M as 52,32 

So M lies on the line joining AB.

Now r2=CM2+AM2

=2×1322+1322

r2=652
