Let λ be an integer. If the shortest distance between the lines x-λ=2y-1=-2z and x=y+2λ=z-λ is 722, then the value of λ is _______.

Solution

x-λ1=y-1212=z-0-12

x-01=y+2λ1=z-λ1

Shortest distance=a2-a1·b1×b2b1×b2

b1×b2=i^j^k^112-12111

=i^12+12-j^1+12+k^1-12

=i^-32j^+k^2=2i^-3j^+k^2

b1×b2b1×b2=2i^-3j^+k^14

a2-a1·b1×b2b1×b2=

-λi^+-2λ+12j^+λk^·2i^-3j^+k^14

=-2λ+6λ-32+λ14=722

5λ-32=72

5λ=32±72

5λ=5,-2

λ=1,-25
