Let A = I 2 − 2 M M T , where M is real matrix of order 2 × 1 such that the relation M T M = I 1 holds. If λ…

Let A=I22MMT, where M is real matrix of order 2×1 such that the relation MTM=I1 holds. If λ is a real number such that the relation AX=λX holds for some non-zero real matrix X of order 2×1, then the sum of squares of all possible values of λ is equal to:

Solution

Given: A=I22MMT

A2=I22MMTI22MMT

A2=I22MMT2MMT+4MMTMMT

A2=I24MMT+4MMT as MTM=I1

A2=I2

Also, AX=λX

A2X=λAX

X=λλX as A2=I2 & AX=λX

X=λ2X

Xλ21=0

λ2=1

λ=±1

So, sum of square of all possible values =2
