Let a, b, x and y be real numbers such that a-b=1 and y0 . If the complex number z=x+iy satisfies Imaz+bz+1=y, then which of the following is (are) possible value (s) of x?
  1. -1+1-y2
  2. 1-1+y2
  3. 1+1+y2
  4. -1-1-y2

Solution

Imaz+bz+1=y and z=x+iy

   Imax+iy+bx+iy+1=y

multiply and divide by x+1iy and equate imaginary part

  -yax+b+ayx+1=yx+12+y2

    a-by=yx+12+y2

    y0 and a-b=1

    x+12+y2=1

    x=-1± 1-y2
