Let A  and B be any two 3×3 symmetric and skew symmetric matrices respectively. Then which of the following is NOT true?
  1. A4-B4 is a symmetric matrix
  2. AB-BA is a symmetric matrix
  3. B5-A5 is a skew-symmetric matrix
  4. AB+BA is a skew-symmetric matrix

Solution

Given that AT=A,BT=-B

Now solving all option one by one we get,

Solving A option

C=A4-B4

CT=A4-B4=A4T-B4T=A4-B4=C

C=CT is a symmetric matrix

Solving B option

C=AB-BA

CT=AB-BAT=ABT-BAT

=BTAT-ATBT=-BA+AB=C

C=CT is a symmetric matrix

Solving C option

C=B5-A5

CT=B5-A5T=B5T-A5T=-B5-A5

CCT or C-CT

Solving D option

C=AB+BA

CT=AB+BAT=ABT+BAT

=-BA-AB=-C

C=-CT is skew symmetric matrix

Option (C) is not true.
