Match the following columns and select the correct option:-

Column-I Column-II
(a) Pneumotaxic centre (i) Alveoli
(b) O2 Dissociation curve (ii) Pons region of brain
(c) Carbonic anhydrase (iii) Haemoglobin
(d) Primary site of exchange of gases (iv) R.B.C.
  1. (a)-(i), (b)-(iii), (c)-(ii), (d)-(iv)
  2. (a)-(ii), (b)-(iii), (c)-(iv), (d)-(i)
  3. (a)-(iii), (b)-(ii), (c)-(iv), (d)-(i)
  4. (a)-(iv), (b)-(i), (c)-(iii), (d)-(ii)

Solution

The centres in pons influence the rhythmicity centre of the medulla. Pons has pneumotaxic centre and apneustic centre. The pneumotaxic centre inhibits the inspiratory neurons and facilitates expiration as a result the breathing rate becomes increased.

Alveoli is the primary site of the lungs where the exchange of gases takes place between lungs and blood capillaries.

RBC has the presence of a carbonic anhydrase enzyme that helps in bidirectional reaction, i.e. formation and dissociation of carbonic acid.

The oxygen dissociation curve explains the saturation of O2 with haemoglobin.
