Given below are two statements : One is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R

Assertion A : Zero orbital overlap is an out of phase overlap.

Reason R : It results due to different orientation/ direction of approach of orbitals.

In the light of the above statements. Choose the correct answer from the options given below

Solution

When orbitals of two atoms come close to form bond, their overlap may be positive, negative or zero depending upon the sign (phase) and direction of orientation of amplitude of orbital wave function in space  Positive and negative sign on boundary surface diagrams show the sign (phase) of orbital wave function and are not related to charge. Orbitals forming bond should have same sign (phase) and orientation in space. This is called positive overlap
