A planet has double the mass of the earth. Its average density is equal to that of the earth. An object weighing W on earth will weigh on that planet:

  1. 214W
  2. 213W
  3. 2W
  4. 223W

Solution

The formula for acceleration due to gravity is

g=GMR2

Let the density of earth and planet be ρ, and the radius of the planet be R'. Let R be the radius of the earth and g be the acceleration due to gravity of earth and g' be the acceleration due to gravity of planet.

So, the masses are

M=43πR3ρ   ...(i)

M'=43πR'3ρ   ...(ii)

So, g'g=GM'R'2GMR2=M'MRR'2   ...(iii)

From equation (i) and (ii) we get R'=213R

Substituting the value in equation (iii),

g'g=212-23=213g

Weight is given by W'=mg'=213W
