A gas is compressed adiabatically, which one of the following statement is NOT true?

  1. There is no heat supplied to the system
  2. There is no change in the internal energy
  3. The temperature of the gas increases

  4. The change in the internal energy is equal to the work done on the gas

Solution

In adiabatic process,

Q=0 and U0

Using the first law of thermodynamics, Q=U+W

U=-W W is the work done by the gas, so -W will be the work done on the gas

As the gas is compressed

W <0

Therefore, U >0 and hence T >0.
