Solution

When 2-methylhexane reacts with chromic oxide, toluene (compound $X$ ) is formed. Further it reacts with $\mathrm{KMnO}_4$ to form benzoic acid (compound $Y$ ) which on reaction with nitric and sulphuric acid forms $m$-nitro benzoic acid (compound $Z$ ). Therefore, $P$ and $Q$ are $-\mathrm{COOH}$ and $\mathrm{NO}_2$ respectively.
