In which of the following molecules are all the bonds not equal?
  1. $\mathrm{NF}_3$
  2. $\mathrm{ClF}_3$
  3. BF3
  4. $\mathrm{AlF}_{3}$

Solution

In $\mathrm{ClF}_3$, the chlorine atom is $s p^3 d$ hybridised. So, the bonds are not equal and have trigonal-bipyramidal geometry. $\mathrm{BF}_3$ and $\mathrm{AlF}_3$ show a trigonal symmetric structure because of $s p^2$ hybridisation. $\mathrm{NF}_3$ shows pyramidal geometry because of $s p^3$ hybridisation.
