In which of the following ionization processes, the bond order has increased and the magnetic behaviour has changed?
$\mathrm{C}_2 \longrightarrow \mathrm{C}_2^{+}$
$\mathrm{NO} \longrightarrow \mathrm{NO}^{+}$
$\mathrm{O}_2 \longrightarrow \mathrm{O}_2^{+}$
$\mathrm{N}_2 \longrightarrow \mathrm{N}_2^{+}$
Solution
In $\mathrm{C}_2-\mathrm{C}_2{ }^{+}$electron is removed from bonding molecular orbital so bond order decreases. In $\mathrm{NO}$ $\longrightarrow \mathrm{NO}^{+}$, electron is removed from anti bonding molecular orbital so bond order increases and nature changes from paramagnetic to diamagnetic.
Hence, (B) is correct.
