In this figure the resistance of the coil of galvanometer G is 2 . The emf of the cell is 4 V. The ratio of potential difference across C1 and C2 is

  1. 1
  2. 45
  3. 54
  4. 34

Solution

Current flowing through both capacitors will be zero at steady state.

The potential difference across capacitor C1 will be the sum of the potential difference across the resistor 6 Ω and the galvanometer resistance. Mathematically,

VC1=i6+RG   ...1

Similarly, the potential difference across capacitor C2 will be the sum of the potential difference across the resistor 8 Ω and the galvanometer resistance. Mathematically,

VC2=iRG+8   ...2

Divide equation (1) by equation (2) to obtain the required ratio.

VC1VC2=i6+RGiRG+8 Ω= 6+2 Ω2 Ω+8 Ω= 45
