In the following halogenated organic compounds the one with maximum number of chlorine atoms in its structure is:
  1. Chloral
  2. Gammaxene
  3. Chloropicrin
  4. Freon-12

Solution

Percentage of chlorine content = mass of chlorinemass of organic compound × 100

(A) Chloral (CCl3CHO):

Percentage of chlorine content = 3 × 35.5147.5 × 100 = 72.203%

(B) Gammaxene C6H6Cl6:

Percentage of chlorine content = 6 × 35.5291 × 100 = 73.2%

(C) Chloropicrin Cl3CNO2:

Percentage of chlorine content = 3 × 35.5165 × 100 = 64.54%

(D) Freon-12 CF2Cl2:

Percentage of chlorine content = 2 × 35.5121 × 100 = 58.67%

As per the percentage of chlorine, Gammaxene has the maximum number of chlorine atoms.
