In an ammeter 0.2% of main current passes through the galvanometer. If resistance of galvanometer is G, the resistance of ammeter will be:
  1. 1499G
  2. 499500G
  3. 1500G
  4. 500499G

Solution

As shown in figure a shunt S is connected in parallel with the galvanometer to convert it into the ammeter, let G is the resistant of the galvanometer. Where I is the current in the circuit as shown, according to question 0·2% current passing through the galvanometer, i.e.,

IG = 0·2% of I = 0·2100I= I500;

so, the current through the shunt is I=IG + IS  IS = I-IGIS = I-1500 =499500I
As G and the shunt S are in parallel combination ,

VG = VS

igRg=isRsi500G=499500iS
S=G499
Equivalent resistance of the ammeter
1Req=1G+1G499Req=G500
