In a radioactive decay process, the activity is defined as A=-dNdt, where N(t) is the number of radioactive nuclei at time t. Two radioactive sources, S1 and S2 have same activity at time t=0. At a later time, the activities of S1 and S2 are A1 and A2, respectively. When S1 and S2 have just completed their 3rd and 7th half-lives, respectively, the ratio A1A2 is _____.

Solution

Activity for both the cases can be written as, A1=A0e-λ1t1

also A2=A0e-λ2t2.

Half-life for the reaction can be written as, t121=ln2λ1 and hence

at t1=3ln2λ1.

A1=A0e-λ13ln2λ1

A1=A0e-3ln2                ... i

Similarly, for the second case, we can write

t2=7ln2λ2 and therefore,

A2=A0e-λ27ln2λ2

A2=A0e-7ln2                ... ii

From i and ii, we get

A1A2=A0e-3ln2A0e-7ln2=A0eln2-3A0eln2-7=2-32-7=16

Therefore, required ration would be A1A2=16
