In a potentiometer, a wire of length 10 m having resistance 50 Ω is used. A battery of 5 V and a resistor of 450 Ω are connected in series to the wire. If an unknown battery of emf 'E' balances the potentiometer at 450 cm, then the value of E is
  1. 0.225 V
  2. 1.25 V
  3. 2.25 V
  4. 0.0225 V

Solution

In the case of potentiometer null point is obtained when the current flowing from the battery E1 should be equal to current drawn from the battery E2,

i1=i2E1Rwire+R=E2RBalance

here,

E1=5 VRwire= 50 Ω, R=450 Ω & E2=E

550+450=ERBalance

the value of RBalanceis,

RBalacne=Rwire×4501000=50×4501000

550+450=E50×4501000E=0.225 V
