In a photoelectric experiment, ultraviolet light of wavelength 280 nm is used with lithium cathode having work function ϕ=2.5 eV. If the wavelength of incident light is switched to 400 nm, find out the change in the stopping potential.

Solution

From the photoelectric equation,

eV0=hcλϕ

Using this equation for the given two cases,

eV1=hc280 nmϕ

eV2=hc400 nmϕ

On subtracting,

eV1V2=1240120280×400                   =1.3 eV

V1V2=1.3 V
