If X is a Poisson variate such that 2P(X=1)=5P(X=5)+2P(X=3), then the standard deviation of X is
  1. 4
  2. 2
  3. 12
  4. 2

Solution

It is given that,

2P(X=1)=5P(X=5)+2P(X=3),

The formula for Poisson PX=r=e-λλrr!.

2e-λλ1!=5e-λλ55!+2e-λλ33!

2=λ424+λ23

2=3λ4+24λ272

144=3λ4+24λ2

λ4+8λ2-48=0

Consider λ2=x,

x2+8x-48=0

(x+12)(x-4)=0

x=4 and x-12

The standard deviation is,

x=λ2=4 and λ=2
