If the projections of the line segment AB on XY, YZ and ZX planes are 15,46,7 respectively, then the projection of AB on y-axis is

Solution

Let, the vector AB=li^+mj^+nk^

Projection on XY plane is l2+m2=15  l2+m2=15  ...1

Projection on YZ plane is m2+n2=46  m2+n2=46  ...2

Projection on ZX plane is n2+l2=7n2+l2=49  ...3

Subtracting equation 2 from equation 3 ,

l2+n2-n2+m2=49-46=3 l2-m2=3 l+ml-m=3 

 l+m=3 and l-m=1 

So, l=2, m=1
Hence, the projection of AB on y-axis is m=1
