If the lengths of the tangents drawn from a point P to the three circles x 2 + y 2 - 4 = 0 , x 2 + y 2 - 2 x…

If the lengths of the tangents drawn from a point P to the three circles x2+y2-4=0, x2+y2-2x+3y=0 and x2+y2+7y-18=0 are equal, then the coordinates of P are
  1. (2,5)
  2. (3,4)
  3. (4,3)
  4. (5,2)

Solution

Given:

S1x2+y2-4=0S2x2+y2-2x+3y=0S3x2+y2+7y-18=0

We know if the length of tangents drawn from an external points to three circles are equal, then that point is the radical centre.

First we will find the radical axes which is

S1-S2=0 or S2-S3=0

We take,

S1-S2=0

2x-3y-4=0  ...i

And, S1-S3=0

-7y+18-4=0  ...ii

Solving i & ii, we get

x=5  & y=2.
