If the earth suddenly shrinks to 164th of its original volume with its mass remaining the same, the period of rotation of earth becomes 24xh. The value of x is ________

Solution

L= constant; L=Iω

From the conservation of angular momentum,

25MR2ω1=25MR42ω2MR2ω1=MR2ω216ω1ω2=116

Using ω=2πT for each case along with the respective angular frequencies,

T2T1=116

T1T2=161

Using T1=24 h, x=16 by comparing with the given time period in the question.
