If the bi-quadratic equation f ( x ) = x 4 + 2 x 3 - 16 x 2 - 22 x + 7 = 0 has 2 + 3 as one of its roots,…

If the bi-quadratic equation f(x)=x4+2x3-16x2-22x+7=0 has 2+3 as one of its roots, then which of the following is not a root of fx?
  1. 3-2
  2. 2-3
  3. -3+2
  4. -3-2

Solution

Given, f(x)=x4+2x3-16x2-22x+7=0

 2+3 is one of the roots of fx=0

 2-3 is also one of the roots of fx=0

Let us assume the other two roots of the fx=0 are α, β

 Sum of roots=-2

α+β+2+3+2-3=-2

α+β=-6 i

And product of roots=7

αβ2+32-3=7

αβ=7 ii

Put β=7α in equation i, we get

α2+6α+7=0

α=-6±36-282=-3±2

Put value of α in equation ii, we get

β=-32

 Roots of the fx=0 are 2+3, 2-3, -3+2, -3-2.
