If f:AB and g:BC are two functions such that gof:AC is a bijection, then which one of the following is always true?
  1. f and g are bijections
  2. f is an injection and g is a surjection

Solution

Given:

f:AB and g:BC

And, gof:AC is a bijection.

Let x, yA such that fx=fy.

Then,

fx=fy

gfx=gfy

gofx=gofy

x=y;   gof:AC is one-one

Hence, fx is an injection.

Now,

Let z be an arbitrary element of C.

Since, gof:AC is onto.

Therefore, there exists xA such that

gofx=z

gfx=z

gy=z where y=fxB.

Thus, for all zC there exists y=fxB such that gy=z.

Hence, g:BC is surjection.
