If an energy of 684 J is needed to increase the speed of a fly wheel from 180rpm to 360rpm, then find its moment of inertia.
  1. 0.7 kg m2
  2. 3.85 kg m2
  3. 2.75 kg m2
  4. 7.28 kg m2

Solution

Given the initial speed, 180 rpm=180×2π60 rad s-1 and final speed of the flywheel 360 rpm=360×2π60 rad s-1

The energy given to the flywheel will increase the rotational kinetic energy of the flywheel, therefore, change in rotational kinetic energy will be KE=12Iω2=684 J

684 J=12Iωf-ωi2I=684×2360×2π60-180×2π602=136836π2=3.85 kg m2
