If ad-bc0, then the area (in sq. units) of the parallelogram formed by the lines ax+by+2=0, ax+by+5=0, cx+dy+3=0 and cx+dy+7=0 is

Solution

Given:

ax+by+2=0   ...iax+by+5=0   ....ii Parallel lines

cx+dy+3=0   ....iiicx+dy+7=0   ....iv Parallel lines

Opposite sides are parallel in parallelogram.

Let d1 be the distance between i & ii, then

d1=5-2a2+b2=3a2+b2 

Let d2 be the distance between iii & iv, then

d2=7-3c2+d2=4c2+d2

Area of parallelogram=3a2+b2×4c2+d2

                                   =12a2+b2c2+d2
