If A(1,3) and C(7,5) are two opposite vertices of a square, then find the equation of a side passing through A.

Solution

Let ABCD be a square where A1,3 & C7,5.

 Equation of diagonal AC is

y-53-5=x-71-7

 3y-15=x-7

 3y-x-8=0  ...1

 Slope of AC is 13

Suppose slope of AB is m.

 Diagonal makes 45° with the side.

 m-131+13×m=tan45°

 3m-13+m=1

 3m-13+m2=1

 9m2-6m+1=9+m2+6m

 8m2-12m-8=0

 2m2-3m-2=0

2m2-4m+m-2=0

 2mm-2+1m-2=0

 m=-12 or m=2

when m=-12

Equation of side passing through A is y-3=-12x-1

2y-6=-x+1

 x+2y-7=0   ...2

When m=2, equation of side passing through A is

y-3=2x-1

2x-y+1=0 ...3

So, option 4 is correct.
