Identify ( Z ) in the following reaction: CH 3 COOH ⟶ LiAlH 4 ( X ) 573   K Cu ( Y ) ⟶…

Identify (Z) in the following reaction:

CH3COOHLiAlH4(X)573 KCu(Y) dil.NaOH (Z)

  1. Aldol
  2. Ketol
  3. Acetol
  4. Butanol

Solution

LiAlH4 can reduce the carboxylic acid into the alcohol. So, the acetic acid is converted into the ethanol by LiAlH4 in reaction X. Copper is an oxidising agent. It can oxidise the alcohol to the aldehyde. So, it oxidises the ethanol to the ethanal in reaction Y.

The ethanal has the alpha hydrogen. So, the weak base will take the acidic hydrogen. It will form the carbanion. After that the carbanion will give the nucleophilic addition reaction with another mole of ethanal. The β-hydroxylcarbonyl compound is formed as a product.

Reaction :-

CH3COOHLiAlH4CH3CH2OH573KCuCH3CHO dil.NaOH CH3-CH(OH)-CH2-CHO(Aldol)

Hence the Z in this reaction is aldol.
