Identify the product $\mathrm{P}$ obtained in following reaction. $\begin{aligned} & \text { Benzene + ozone (excess) } \stackrel{\mathrm{CCl}_4}{\longrightarrow} \\ & \text { Benzene triozonide } \stackrel{\mathrm{Zn}/\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}}{\longrightarrow} \mathrm{P}+\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O}_2 \\ & \end{aligned}$
  1. Benzoic acid
  2. Benzaldehyde
  3. Phenol
  4. Glyoxal

Solution

When benzene is treated with ozone in presence of an inert solvent such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene triozonide is formed which is then decomposed by zinc dust and water to give glyoxal.
