Identify the ortho and para directing groups towards aromatic electrophilic substitution reactions from the following list

-OH -CN -CO2H -OCH3 -NHCOCH3 -CHO
I II III IV V VI
  1. I,IV,V
  2. II,III,VI
  3. I,II,IV
  4. IV,V,VI

Solution

Electron donating groups via +M or +H effect, in aromatic ring are called ortho/para directing groups or activating groups. Because these group increase the electron density at ortho and para position so, attacking electrophile attacks on these positions mainly.

Among the given options groups which can donate electrons to the benzene ring are -OH, -OCH3, -NHCOCH3 only. They are ortho para directing groups. Remaining are meta directing group.
