Identify the orbital having highest energy from following:

Identify the orbital having highest energy from following:
  1. 2 p
  2. 3 s
  3. 3 d
  4. 4 p

Solution

Higher the sum of $(\mathrm{n}+l)$ value of an orbital, the higher is its energy. If two orbitals have same value of $(\mathrm{n}+l)$, then the orbital with higher value of n will have more energy.
