Identify the incorrect statement.

Identify the incorrect statement.
  1. Sapwood is involved in conduction of water and minerals from root to leaf
  2. Sapwood is the innermost secondary xylem and is lighter in colour
  3. Due to deposition of tannins, resins, oils etc., heart wood is dark in colour
  4. Heart wood does not conduct water but gives mechanical support

Solution

Heartwood and Sapwood: In old dicot trees the greater part of the secondary wood in the center of the stem is filled with gums, resins, tannins, tyloses, etc., which makes it hard and non-functional. This region is known as Heartwood or Duramen. The narrower outer region of the secondary wood remains light-colored and is called Sapwood or Alburnum. Sapwood helps in inorganic translocation.
