Identify the correct statements from the following. (A) The ionic product of water at $100^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ is $ < 10^{-14}$. (B) $\mathrm{pH}$ of a solution decreases with increasing temperature. (C) $\mathrm{NaH}_2 \mathrm{PO}_4$ on hydrolysis gives a basic solution. (D) $\mathrm{NH}_3$ can act both as Bronsted acid and base.
  1. B, C, D
  2. A, B, C
  3. A, C, D
  4. A, B, D

Solution

(A) The ionic product of water at $100^{\circ} \mathrm{C}$ is $51.3 \times 10^{-14}$. So, this statement is incorrect. (B) On increasing the temperature, $\mathrm{pH}$ of solution also decreases. (C) Since, $\mathrm{Na}_2 \mathrm{HPO}_4$ is a salt of strong base $\mathrm{NaOH}$ and weak acid $\mathrm{H}_3 \mathrm{PO}_4$, it gives a basic solution on hydrolysis. (D). $\mathrm{NH}_3$ can act as both Bronsted acid and base because it can accept $\mathrm{H}^{+}$ion to form $\mathrm{NH}_4^{+}$and donate $\mathrm{H}^{+}$ion to form $\mathrm{NH}_2^{-}$. Hence statements B, C, D are correct.
