Hydrolysis of $\mathrm{NCl}_3$ gives $\mathrm{NH}_3$ and $X$. Which of the following is $X$ ?
  1. $\mathrm{HClO}_4$
  2. $\mathrm{HClO}_3$
  3. $\mathrm{HOCl}$
  4. $\mathrm{HClO}_2$

Solution

Hydrolysis of $\mathrm{NCl}_3$ gives $\mathrm{NH}_3$ or $\mathrm{NH}_4 \mathrm{OH}$ and $\mathrm{HClO}$ as $\mathrm{NCl}_3+4 \mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{O} \longrightarrow \mathrm{NH}_4 \mathrm{OH}+3 \mathrm{HOCl}$
