How many grams of Mg is required to completely reduce 100ml, 0.1M NO3- solution using the following reaction
NO3-+MgMg2++NH3

NO3-+5+Mg0Mg2++2+N-3H3

In this redox reaction oxidation state of N is changing from +5 to -3. So, n-factor for the NO3- will be 8. And for the Mg it will be 2.

Now according to Law of equivalent, Number of equivalent of both should be equal.

Eq. of NO3- = Eq. of Mgn-factor×M×V = n-factor×Mass of MgMolar mass8×0.1×0.1L = 2×Mass of Mg24Mass of Mg = 0.08×12 = 0.96 g
