How do lichens indicate pollution?

How do lichens indicate pollution?
  1. They grow in polluted areas
  2. They do not grow in polluted areas
  3. They change color in polluted areas
  4. They emit a smell in polluted areas

Solution

Lichens are very good pollution indicators, they do not grow in polluted areas. This is because they are sensitive to changes in their environment, such as increased levels of pollutants. If one sees a lichen in nature one would never imagine that they had two different organisms within them.
