Given two statements below :

Statement I : In Cl2 molecule the covalent radius is double of the atomic radius of chlorine.

Statement II : Radius of anionic species is always greater than their parent atomic radius.

Choose the most appropriate answer from options given below 

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
  3. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
  4. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.

Solution

In Cl2 molecule, the covalent radius is half of the internuclear distance, so statement I is false. The covalent radius is little smaller than the actual radius of the atom of chlorine due to overlapping during formation of covalent bond.

For the same element, anion has lower effective nuclear charge than atom so, anion is larger than the parent atom. That means statement II is correct.
