Given below are two statements:
Statement I:
Primary aliphatic amines react with HNO2 to give unstable diazonium salts.
Statement II :
Primary aromatic amines react with HNO2 to form diazonium salts which are stable even above 300 K. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below
  1. Both Statements I and Statement II are is incorrect.
  2. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
  3. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
  4. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.

Solution

 When primary aliphatic amines react with HNO2 then unstable diazonium salt, which result in the formation of alcohol and N2 gas.

And when primary aromatic amines react with HNO2 the diazonium salts formed are stable due to resonance stabilisation of the aromatic ring of aryl diazoniun salts.But these are stable only at 273-277 K, at higher temperatures they are unstable.

Hence, Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
