Given below are two statements.

Statement I: The presence of weaker π-bonds make alkenes less stable than alkanes

Statement II: The strength of the double bond is greater than that of carbon-carbon single bond.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options : given below.

  1. Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
  2. Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
  3. Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
  4. Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.

Solution

As sigma bond is formed along the internuclear axis it is stronger than pi-bond, and due to the presence of pi-bonds alkenes will be more reactive towards electrophilic reagents.Hence they are less stable than alkanes.

The strength of carbon-carbon double bond is greater than single bond as bond strength is directly proportional to bond order.

Hence, both the statements are correct.
