Given below are two statements : Statement I: Mn ( CN ) 6 3 - ,    Fe ( CN ) 6 3 - and Co C 2 O 4…

Given below are two statements :
Statement I: Mn(CN)63-,  Fe(CN)63- and CoC2O433- are d2sp3 hybridised.
Statement II : MnCl63- and FeF63- are paramagnetic and have 4 and 5 unpaired electrons, respectively.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

  1. Statement I is correct but statement II is false
  2. Both statement I and statement II are false
  3. Statement I is incorrect but statement II is true
  4. Both statement I and statement II are are true

Solution

CN- is strong field ligand. C2O42- is chelating ligand. Mn3+ has d4 configuration. Fe3+ has d5 configuration. Co3+ has d6 configuration.

All will have larger splitting values hence, they undergo d2sp3 hybridisation.

MnCl63-                              FeF63-

d4 configuration, Cl-             d5 configuration, F-
