For a reaction taking place in three steps at same temperature, overall rate constant K=K1K2K3. If Ea1,Ea2 and Ea3 are 40,50 and 60 kJ/mol respectively, the overall Ea is _________ kJ/mol.

Solution

According to Arrhenius concept,

K=Ae-Ea/RT

Given that,

K=K1.K2/K3

Using Arrhenius equation we can expand above equation as

e-Ea(net)/RT=e-Ea1/RT×e-Ea2/RTe-Ea3/RT

Hence,

 Ea(net)=Ea1+Ea2-Ea3Ea(net)=40+50-60=30kJ/mol
